Why Update Meter Yako

Updating your meter keeps it running smoothly and ensures it accepts new tokens.

Important note: Most meters are already updated.
Check if meter needs update;

  • Go to prepaid.ke and enter your meter number.
  • Dial *483*320# enter your meter number.
  • Landlord portal - Visit portal.m-payaenergy.net and log in.

Steps to Update:

  1. Buy Tokens as Usual: Buy your electricity credit as you normally would. The necessary update codes will be included in the token message.
  2. Enter the Codes on Your Meter: Enter the two update codes (one at a time), followed by the third code, which is your credit token. Once complete, your meter is fully updated.

How to update your meter

Option 1: Token Vending

  1. You'll receive update codes automatically with your next token purchase.
  2. Dial USSD *483*320# or use our paybill number to buy tokens.
  3. Enter the three codes provided in this order: reset code, update code, and token code.

Option 2: Prepaid.ke

  1. Go to Prepaid.ke and enter your meter number
  2. Enter your meter number into the USSD menu Option 1 – Update My Meter
  3. Enter your Meter Number and Receive Update Token 1 & 2 as SMS
  4. Enter Update Token 1 into your prepaid meter and wait a few seconds for the meter to accept your token.
  5. Enter Update Token 2 into your prepaid meter and wait a few seconds for the meter to accept your token.
  6. Vend as Usual: Buy New Vend using usual M-PESA Paybill, you’ll receive only 1 token which is your energy credit token, enter the Token into your meter. Your meter update is complete.

Option 3: USSD

  1. Dial the USSD *483*320# on your phone
  2. Enter your meter number into the USSD menu Option 1 – Update My Meter
  3. Enter your Meter Number and Receive Update Token 1 & 2 as SMS
  4. Enter Update Token 1 into your prepaid meter and wait a few seconds for the meter to accept your token.
  5. Enter Update Token 2 into your prepaid meter and wait a few seconds for the meter to accept your token.
  6. Vend as Usual: Buy New Vend using usual M-PESA Paybill, you’ll receive only 1 token which is your energy credit token, enter the Token into your meter. Your meter update is complete.

Option 3: Landlord Portal (For Landlords Only)

  • Visit portal.m-payaenergy.net and log in.
  • Once logged in, you’ll see a list of all submeters needing an update, along with their specific update codes.

Yes, update codes are provided at no cost.

The landlord can contact their electricians and resellers to help with the update.

For each meter, update codes are issued on the next token purchased by the tenant. Landlords can also update all their submeters through the Landlord Portal, where they’ll find a list of submeters requiring updates along with the necessary update codes.

Vending will continue as usual. The update won’t change the vending process.

All old tokens must be entered before the update is complete. Old tokens will not work after the update.

Updates to the prepaid electricity meters will not affect the user’s electricity usage in any way.

The update is only done once.

No, the update won’t impact your token usage rate. It only optimizes the meter's performance.
